Summary

Set in Florida, USA, the story is Tyler's recollection of his apocalyptic journey with his three friends: Rufus Smith, Jake Newton and Eli Cooper and their struggle to create a Zombie Free Haven. On their first day of senior year, a pandemic caused by a newfound drug (Psyriviox) forces them to seek shelter in a burnout treehouse. After a fight with their undead math teacher, they determine that they are in a Zombie Apocalypse and construct armor/weapons to survive.

Unable to find other survivors, they set-up camp in Tyler’s house. Soon after, they rescue Eli’s Russian friend (Nicholai Richton) from a Hospital who details the history of Psyriviox. Key points include:

- Prior to the pandemic, Nicholai’s and Eli's parents were acquainted doctors/scientists that studied Psyriviox.

- Psyriviox if inoculated properly (1 metric drop a week) can make people almost invincible with superhuman strength (Sane Alpha). Conversely, any variant inoculation will result in people turning into extremely powerful, zombielike beings (Maniacal Alpha).

- The ‘Moscow Massacre’ (an experimental incident involving numerous Russian doctors illegally testing Psyriviox on near-dead test subjects) triggered the Pandemic.

Nicholai is welcomed into the group and they fortify Tyler’s house, placing up a sign: HAVEN.

Three months after the creation of Haven, the five friends have still found no outside survivors and find it difficult to be motivated in a remorseless dystopia where everything is mundane and purposeless. During this time, Jake becomes convinced that Nicholai is evil and reveals to Tyler alone that Nicholai is experimenting with Psyriviox and will eventually use everyone in the group as Test Subjects.

Soon after, Tyler discovers Jake as a drug induced ‘Maniacal Alpha’. Nicholai tries to explain himself, but Tyler shoots him in the head. In the climax, Rufus is disposing of Jake when Tyler discovers Rufus’s step-parents as ‘Maniacal Alphas’. Tyler holds a gun up to Rufus and asks him to explain himself. With nothing left to lose, Rufus explains to Tyler that during the summer break he had a fiery accident in the treehouse leaving him inches away from death. He explains that he survived on Psyriviox as a test subject, inoculated via Eli's parents. Rufus pieces together most loose ends of the story before setting the house on fire; incinerating Jake, his step-parents and himself. Eli finds Tyler kneeling on the lawn in front of the fire. Tyler being completely devastated by the turn of events: encourages Eli to shoot him in the head.

Eli knocks out Tyler, but due to the severe burns from the fire, has to inoculate him with Psyriviox for him to survive. Tyler awakes and is deeply distraught that he is a ‘Sane Alpha’, but persists with living to try and redeem his mistake of killing Nicholai. Eli hands Tyler ‘Nicholai's diary’ which pieces all the events that led to the climatic night. Ultimately, Tyler continues to survive on Psyriviox: being somewhat superhuman. Tyler may be an ‘Alpha’ but he is no longer a ‘brainless zombie following Jake's orders’... The ending of the book is the sign being readjusted to ZAVEN (Zombie Free Haven). Various elements from each person that passed away during the book are slung over the sign.
